Upward is a Christian-based instructional league specifically designed for kindergarten through eighth grade boys and girls and features equal teams, equal playing time, post-game awards, and much more! In Upward, all participants have the opportunity to develop their character and self-esteem through healthy competition. Practices and games are each limited to one hour per week. Registration begins each September and the season wraps up in early March. Contact Larry Eggenberger for more information.

Upward Frequently Asked Questions
When are practices and games?
Practices begin the week of TBD. You may choose one night (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday) that you CANNOT practice. We will assign your child to one of the remaining nights. Your coach will call and tell you which night you will practice. Practices are one hour a night, one night a week. Games begin TBD and continue every Saturday until TBD. Games are always on Saturdays, and begin in the morning with the kindergarteners. Games last one hour. There are 3 pre-season practices, and 8 weeks of practices and games.

When are Evaluations?
Everyone must attend one basketball evaluation or cheerleading orientation during which parents and guardians are required to attend a mandatory parent meeting.

How long is the season?
The season runs from the first week in January to the last week in February. A league calendar, in both English and Spanish, is available for download here or you may pick up a copy in the church office.

Do you offer football or soccer?
We do not offer football or soccer because we do not have the facilities. The closest church that has Upward football and soccer is Bear Creek Baptist. You can find more information on their website at www.bc-bc.org. You can search for other leagues and churches at www.upward.org.

What kind of Christian message will my child hear?
The kids will have a short devotion midway through practice. The devotion is age-appropriate, and will include Bible verses for the children to remember.

Do I have to order a uniform? What do I get for my money?
The uniform is included in the player fees. There is no extra fee for the uniform unless you want to purchase shorts or a turtleneck. These items are optional at a cost of $15 each. The player fee includes the following for basketball: t-shirt, jersey, Winner Magazine, CD, car magnet, and an end-of-the-season award (a surprise). The cheerleading items are as follows: cheer top, skort, Winner Magazine, CD, car magnet, pompoms, megaphone, hair ribbon, and an end-of-the-season award (a surprise).

When / what is award’s night?
Awards night will be on either March TBD, which will be communicated once a final decision has been made. It is a celebration of the season, with individual awards, giveaways, and a guest speaker. It’s a fun night, and the very last event of the Upward season.

Do I have to be Safe Sanctuary trained to volunteer in Upward? What is Safe Sanctuary training anyway?
For the Upward program you must be Safe Sanctuary trained only if you are a coach, assistant coach, or referee. Safe Sanctuary is a policy we have in place to keep our children safe. A background check is included at no charge to the volunteer. Safe Sanctuary certification renewal is required every two years. For more information on the policy, please contact the church office at 281.463.2330.

Safe Sanctuary

Safe Sanctuary is a Safe Sanctuary training is required for all adults working with children under the age of 18.

Throughout the gospels, Jesus provides teachings on providing a peaceable kingdom for all of God's people, including our most precious gifts, our children and youth (Matthew 5:9, Luke 18:15-17). The peaceable kingdom begins with sanctuary.

Scriptures provide examples of how sanctuary is to be a community of protective nurture and harmony (Psalms 20:1-2, 27:4-5). As Christians, we are called to create a safe sanctuary in our churches. They must be holy, safe, and protective communities for all of God's children, regardless of age or ability. The purpose of this policy is to address the safety of our children and youth at all local churches, and at District or Annual Conference sponsored events. Bear Creek United Methodist Church recognizes the need to have a formal, written policy with procedures in place (1) to help prevent the opportunity for the occurrence and/or the appearance of abuse of children and youth and (2) to help protect workers from false accusations and/or suspicions.

The following policy and procedures are not based on a lack of trust in workers, but are intended to protect our preschoolers, children, youth, workers, employees, volunteers and the entire church body. Careful and confidential documentation is essential to show compliance with policies, to verify information as needed, and to have an accurate record in the case of an incident.

Safe Sanctuary certification renewal is required every two years. For more information please contact the church office at 281-463-2330. Training is held in the Family Life Center, Room 102 unless otherwise noted.

Please review our Safe Sanctuary Policy and complete Appendix C, D and G prior to attending a training session.
