Welcome to Bear Creek United Methodist Church, Houston TX 77084

Bear Creek Library

Bear Creek United Methodist Church was formed in 1977. In 1988, Val Reissig and a handful of volunteers started our church library. The library is open from 9am to 5pm Monday through Thursday, and from 9am to 1pm on Friday except when the church office is closed.  We use a self-checkout system with over 500 books checked out last year. We now have approximately 6,700 books and tapes on our shelves, including books purchased by United Methodist Women for the UMW Reading Program. We are a donor-driven library and rely on support from the church members with books being donated throughout the year, often in memory or honor of someone.

You must have a BCUMC Library Registration card on file in order to check out books from the library. You can pick one up in the library or download one here, complete it and turn it in at the library. Thank you!

NEW - The Bear Creek UMC Library is now online!

Summer Reading Program

To keep young readers reading this summer we have two programs sponsored by the church library. Sit Down for Summer Stories is for children in preschool through kindergarten. Dates are Mondays, June 14, 21, 28, and July 5, 12, 26 from 10:00 to 10:45am. Stories will be read to the children and they can check out books. The children will be rewarded with a sticker for each book they read and a prize for every five books they read.

Our Reading Trackers program is for children who have completed 1st through 5th grade. Readers keep track of the number of minutes they read. Between June 10 and July 29 there will be three opportunities each week for kidz to turn in their reading minutes for prizes: Mondays, 11am-noon, Thursdays 9-11am, and Sundays between worship services. A volunteer will be in the library during these times to validate reading trackers and award prizes.

Come to the Summer Blast on June 8 to receive a reading tracker and check out books for either reading program or stop by the library anytime.

History of BCUMC Library

Bear Creek United Methodist Church was formed in 1977. In 1988, Val Reissig and some volunteers decided that we needed a church library. The old choir room was available, bookcases and books were donated, and we had a library. During her term as librarian, Val had permanent bookshelves and two corner display cases added. Originally the library used a church classification system that organized items by subject with letter designations. There were approximately 2,400 books by 1991. Janice Wood and Henry Van Dyke were also involved in setting up the library. We can thank Henry Van Dyke for getting us involved in CSLAHAC.

He was not only the librarian after Val left, but also was a presenter at CSLA-HAC meetings. After Henry’s death, Barbara Cochran became our new librarian. She was able to procure more bookshelves to finish up our walls and an office armoire for a workstation. She did the initial research and recommended as she left that we convert to the Dewey Decimal System.
In 2003, Amber Woodman became the church librarian. She and her committee spent the first year converting the library to the Dewey Decimal System and creating a computer inventory. With an enthusiastic committee, workdays every Thursday and one Saturday a month, and generous patrons who donate to and use our library, the library continues to thrive. We all work hard to fulfill the stated mission of the library: to maintain the library and its contents as a resource for church members and staff to help them grow spiritually and personally and to promote its use.

The library is open at all times the church office is open. A Summer Blast Book Fair is held once a year with patrons buying books for their own libraries and for donation to the church library. In the summer, two reading programs for ages one year through Kindergarten and first through fifth grade are sponsored by the library and include a weekly story time for the younger children. Reading incentive prizes are awarded. The library is also used for committee meetings and Bible study classes.
