Music and Fine Arts

BCUMC ChoirAbout our Music Staff

Matt Wallace grew up at First United Methodist Nederland where his father was Music Director. He went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Music in 2008. Matt and his wife Megan are looking forward to making a life in the Houston area and sharing it with Bear Creek UMC as he brings his vision for a music program that encompasses opportunities for singers and instrumentalists of all ages.

Our organist is Barbara Holmes.

Nursery care is available during any of the rehearsal times for each group listed here. Contact Matt or the church office at least 24 hours prior to your rehearsal time if childcare is needed.

Chancel Choir

The Chancel Choir leads the music in the 11:00am traditional worship service, presenting anthems that span classical to spirituals and gospel styles. The choir sings year-round but takes a vacation from rehearsals in July. The choir presents an Advent and Lenten major work each year. The choir is open to any interested and committed adults, college-age young people, and high school singers (with previous choral experience). Regular rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Choir Room, with Sunday morning warm-up/rehearsals at 10:30am in the Choir Room.

KidzROCK Choir

This year's KidzROCK Christmas program was a great success. Thank you to all the parents of our young vocalists for attending this year's performance and for allowing your children to bless us with their voices. Thank you to Laura Ann Smith for her dedication to the KidzROCK program!

One of the great benefits our church offers is a quality music program for children, called KidzROCK.

In KidzROCK (which is what we call our children's choir) children will learn the basics of music and singing with a choir. The kidz present a Christmas program and spring musical as well as sing several times each year during church services.

We meet on Sundays from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Choir Room.

Handbells - Grace Ringers

Grace Ringers is a 3 to 4-octave handbell choir with 8 to 13 ringers. This group rings monthly at the 11:00am worship service. The ensemble is open to high school students and adults. Ability to read music is a prerequisite, but previous ringing experience is not required. The ensemble rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00pm in the Choir Room.

Faith Matters Contemporary Worship

Faith Matters is more than just the name of Bear Creek’s contemporary worship hour – it is how we show our Faith that really Matters. Faith Matters is a dynamic, upbeat worship hour combining prayer, scripture, contemporary Christian music, drama, and multimedia presentations in a casual atmosphere where the community of faith can connect with God. The Faith Matters Praise Team leads worshipers every Sunday morning at 9:40am in the Sanctuary of Bear Creek United Methodist Church and invites you to come experience His presence with us.

The Faith Matters Praise Team is made up of instrumentalists including guitars (electric, acoustic and bass), piano, keyboards and drums, vocalists and worship arts (audio, video, drama and dance). Rehearsals are held every Thursday night from 7:00 to 9:30pm in the Sanctuary. Individuals interested in any area of the praise team are encouraged to contact Andy Minchew at 281.798.6731 or Victor Martinez at 832.729.2447 or speak with one of the Faith Matters Praise Team Leadership members to discuss how you might become involved in our team’s ministry.

Men's and Women's Ensembles

These groups are open to adult men and women. The ensembles present monthly special music for the 11:00am worship service. Rehearsals are on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings for women and the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings for men from 6:15 to 6:45pm in the Choir Room.

Choral Opportunities for Older Elementary and Middle School Youth

Seasonal (Advent and Lenten) opportunities for treble 4th through 8th grade singers are offered for students interested in a structured choral experience with emphasis on singing and reading music. While not ongoing, these opportunities to join with the Chancel Choir involve a commitment to rehearse and are organized in the fall and spring. Announcements of these opportunities are made in the Bear Creek Family News.
